The Plot!
In an alternate universe to our own, people are born with strange powers, powers over elements, and over certain classes of items. To help hone these skills and learn to control them, there are school to teach you. The early levels of education follow normal school practices and offer classes on controlling your gift, but these play a small role along side maths, writing, biology, and similar studies. It is only once you have finished your primary education that you go on to master the gifts you have been given.
At Starling university, one of the larger and more prestigious magic schools, they offer a variety of classes for those that can create pictures from flame, to those that can animate the inanimate, and everything in between. It is here that our characters meet and new bonds are built, slowly, but carefully with their fair share of hiccups in between. Only time will decide the outcomes of their budding relationship.

Name: Annabelle Walker (Usually just goes by 'Anna')
Age: 21
Sex: Female
Orientation: Pansexual
Race: Feline
Gift: Anna has the ability to bring to life anything she paints. It works with any medium, even if she were to sketch it, although it would be weak and easily blown away, or destroyed, it would still come to life. Her preferred medium just happens to be water color paints, and that is what she is best with.
Appearance: Anna has bubblegum pink hair that was white before she met Stella, and dark green eyes with a soft, childish face. Her ears and tail are the same color as her hair, and the pupils of her eyes are elongated and dilate to obscure almost all of the green when it is dark, as with any other feline species. She keeps her hair fairly long, hanging down just past her waist, normally left free unless she is painting, then it is pulled up into a messy bun on the top of her head. Anna has fair skin that is relatively unmarred, save for a faded scar on her left side over where her kidney should be. She tends toward wearing jeans and sweaters most of the time, as they are easy and she seems to be always cold, even in the summer months when everyone else is sporting shorts and t-shirts. She is a little on the short side, standing at 5' 2" and is a curvy girl, weighing around 150 lbs. or so. Not one for makeup, she tends to keep her skin free of it, but she wears it occasionally, usually when she is around her family.
Background: Anna grew up in a wealthy household, her parents both rather gifted at what they did, her mother could control metal to do greatly detailed work, and went into the medical field where she could use that to her advantage, and her father could bring written words to life, and became an animator of sorts, assisting companies with marketing their products.
Her mother was unable to have children, or rather, the woman Anna has always known as her mother was unable. When Anna was five years old, her birth mother was strung out on drugs and alcohol leading her to rather violent outbursts. One day, she grew angry at Anna and beat her before finally stabbing her in the side and leaving. Anna's cries alerted a neighbor who came to investigate, finding the little girl in a puddle of blood. She was airlifted to the hospital that the woman who would save her life and eventually adopt her, worked. When Anna woke up, she was a frightened mess that couldn't stand to be touched, it wasn't until after they had to put her into a medically induced coma that she seemed to come out of it. When she woke up again, she seemed to have no memories of what had happened.
Several years passed and she seemed like she still didn't remember what had happened, but at some point along the way, the nightmares started, and she remembered what her early childhood was like. It wasn't until she was sent away to a private school that things got to be too much for her to handle, her parents seemed to notice something was wrong, but she always smiled and brushed it off, saying she was just tired, or thinking about some of the sad things that she learned about in history classes. Since she had always been a sensitive girl, this usually sufficed to appease them. It was easy since she didn't see them much during the school year. She ended up falling in with the wrong crowd when she was away at school, the kids who had parents that ignored when their pills went missing. She had been hesitant at first, but they helped her sleep, helped her forget, and eventually, she turned to harder things.
When she was sixteen, she tried to kill herself, she slit her wrists in the bathtub of her room after her roommate left, if she hadn't come back for something she had forgotten, Anna would have died that day, too. Her parents were devastated, but supportive, making sure she got the help she needed and doing everything they could to show their love and support. Eventually, she pulled out of it and became her bubbly self again, going to school close to home again, and making friends, it was almost like it had never happened in the first place, as long as she hid her scars.
Her best friend was the only one she could never fool, because he had been in a dark place too, one that she had pulled him out of. With her scrappy little bubbly personality, and mess of white hair that she always yelled at him for pulling. He was the reason she stopped wearing it in a ponytail in the first place. He saw how she struggled with her feelings still, and made sure that she never had the chance to fall back into drugs, or try to kill herself.
Personality: Anna has an outgoing, bubbly personality and is easy to get along with, but you should never let her innocent baby face fool you, she has quite the dirty and twisted mind. She tends to be the one everyone goes to when they have a problem, or need a shoulder to cry on. She is an excellent listener, and kind to a fault, even if it means she gets hurt, as long as she can make those around her happy, she's happy too. She has bad moods as well, though, and those are not a good time to catch her. She is never loud when she is angry, instead, she is quiet, but her soft voice has been known to bring grown men to their knees in fear of her, and she is known for being so kind, that people question what you did wrong to get her so angry, so expect no help from them. No one ever suspects her constant struggle with severe depression, and she does everything she can to hid it behind her smiles and laughter.
Name: Adrian Steele
Age: 25
Sex: Male
Orientation: Heterosexual
Race: Golden Jackal
Gift: He is able to manipulate and follow electrical currents, and find where shorts are in various electrical systems. He uses it to his advantage and works for himself, going out on jobs for many private parties and companies, be it something small like finding out why the windows won't roll up or down in someone's car, or something large, like finding out where the outage is on a grid network for running the city.
Appearance: Adrian has a mop of dirty blond hair, and fox like ears and tail, often causing people to question what he is, given the odd coloring. He has light golden eyes and honey colored skin with a warm smile of slightly threatening teeth as soon as you catch sight of his canines. When he's working, he wears slacks and suit coats over a button down shirt, but rarely wears a tie. When he's not, he tends to wear a lot of lounge pants and t-shirts, with the occasional pair of jeans when he needs to run out of the house for anything. He's of an average height, standing around 6'1" and weighing 200 pounds. He has a square jaw and a nose that is slightly off from being broken when he was younger over something so stupid he doesn't talk about it to anyone. He likes to play sports on the weekends, giving him a somewhat athletic build, but he doesn't do it enough to make him exceptionally muscular either.
Background: Adrian was raised in an upper class family and got into his fair share of trouble as a kid, starting fights and bullying those younger than he was. It wasn't for lack of parenting, his parents tried to do all the right things and loved him unconditionally, but he was an angry child. The loss of his younger brother made him angry, he wondered what kind of God would take a little kid like that, and he got into fights with just about anyone from then on. He got himself kicked out of schools, and nearly thrown in Juvenal detention more than once, had his parents not smoothed things over.
That was what they did, after all. His mother did, at least. Her gift was the ability to see what people were feeling and that made it easy for her to say the right things, and get them feeling the things she wanted them to, for the most part. It only worked if people could be talked sense to, if they were irrational, there wasn't much she could do, but she saved his ass more than once. His father was able to feel precious gems below the surface, making him a wealthy man, but he was never much for conversation, normally sitting back and letting his wife handle it when she could, and using money when she couldn't.
It was just after a fight that he met Anna for the first time, he was thirteen and she had just turned ten, and he was angry, so he shoved her and called her some pretty nasty things, but she smiled, picked herself up and dusted herself off and told him it was okay that he was angry. She followed him when he stormed off, and sat beside him when he finally flopped down on a bench in frustration, annoyed that she wouldn't leave him be. He tried to push her off the bench, but she just lept to the back of it, balancing on the narrow board with a smug look on her face and her tail swaying back and forth. Everything about her pissed him off, and he had growled at her before storming off, only to be followed again.
Their game of cat and mouse continued for weeks, she always found him, day after day, no matter what he did, and over the weeks he grew to enjoy her company. He started behaving better, doing well in school, and making friends, becoming fiercely protective of the girl with the white hair. The relationship with his parents improved, and after awhile, no one would ever have believed he used to be a trouble maker that got into fights at the drop of a hat.
When he found out about Anna's suicide attempt at school, he got angry and drunk with the intent of starting another fight, but he couldn't bring himself to do it, he couldn't fight another person again out of anger. When he sobered up, he was right there at the hospital with her parents, and he promised he would keep watch over her from then on to make sure it never happened again. He studied harder at school, he wanted to make sure he got into the same academy her parents were going to send her to, and he needed top notch grades for that.
In a way, while he still wishes it never happened, it was good for him. If Anna hadn't been stupid and reckless, he wouldn't have pushed so hard to get into Starling Academy, and he wouldn't have met the love of his life. He was in his second to last year when they finally met, even though he had seen her around. He noticed that she was always surrounded by books and didn't seem to eat right. The only thing he ever saw her eat was protein bars, and it worried him. One day, he couldn't take it anymore when he saw her sitting outside, unwrapping another meal bar. He brought her a stack of containers full of food, just to make sure there was something she would eat, and sat down beside her until she ate some real food. That became their thing, he brought her food, made sure she ate, and then left. After a few weeks, he started staying around her more, helping with homework, making her stop and relax every now and then. Before either of them seemed to realize it, they fell in love with each other.
Personality: He has a laid back personality with an easy smile and warm eyes, though he stays professional at the same time unless he knows you. He can still be quick to anger, but he doesn't get into the fights he once did, instead he talks his way out of things. Growing up fighting teaches you how to be a smooth talker, even if he didn't have nearly the skill for it that his mother did, he was pretty good at getting himself out of scraps without it having to come to blows. He gets rather cocky from time to time, probably as a result of someone inflating his ego over the years, but he tries to keep that in check and stay likable. If you do become friends with him, he is kind, and protective, not as protective as he is over the same someone that caused his swelled ego or the woman who stole his heart, but protective none the less. At heart, though he would never openly admit it, he's pretty romantic, and can't resist a puppy dog face, no matter how hard he tries, nor can he resist just about anything Stella asks of him. He's hopeless when it comes to the women in his life, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

Name: Shiven Svedsen
Age: 22
Sex: Female
Orientation: Extremely Homosexual
Race: Arctic Fox
Gift: Shiven is able to make spells using paper. More specifically, origami that she folds can come to life. The more accurate the shape, the better the origami sculpture will act like what it's supposed to. Considered a rare gift, not many people think it's all that useful.
Appearance: Shiven has naturally white hair that she dyes the tips of blue. She doesn't like to wear her hair any longer than to her chin. Her ears and tail are especially fluffy. Her eyes are an icy blue color that seem to pierce through any facade. Her skin is a very pasty white with every scar she's ever gotten showing up in the contrast. She's 5'9", not exceptionally curvy, 160 lbs. She wears whatever she feels like for that day, whether it be ripped jeans and a t-shirt or a skirt and blouse. She tends for either extremely casual or extremely formal, nothing that would be considered 'girly.' She doesn't wear make-up for two reasons. One, her parents constantly tried to get her to wear it. Two, it makes her skin break out. She's never been able to find any that didn't.
Background: Shiven grew up an only child with parents that were very traditional. Her mom was the stay-at-home mom that was always cooking or cleaning or making something while her dad was the bread winner of the family. He would go to work in the morning, come home, greet everyone in the house the exact same way every day. It was almost unbearable. What was really funny was that neither of them had a trace of the talent. They were both human too. Shiven had to trace her line back pretty far to find that the genes that she got were very receded. Her grandmother on her mother's side had a talent with glass and her father's sister was also a fox.
Of course, her parents didn't fuss over it. Shiven knew they were hoping for just a human baby without any talent. Her gift with paper came about after she started watching kids shows. They showed how to fold a very simple paper bird. After Shiven folded it, the bird came to life and fluttered around the room. Her parents showed their dismay only long enough for Shiven to register that they weren't actually proud until they came to her and said they were. She knew it was because they weren't going to let anything break their sense of a perfect life.
As Shiven got older, she was pushed to work on her gift. She got all the encouragement any kid would need to want to show off, but Shiven couldn't get over the disappointment that her parents would express behind closed doors. She would sneak up to doors and listen in on conversations on how her parents thought they were failures. They didn't argue with each other, and they would always end the conversations with something like, "It could be worse," or, "We'll love her no matter what," as if Shiven were born some kind of freak.
It turns out that her parents were actually part of a prejudice group of people not wanting anything to do with the magical arts. They didn't like that people would be born with animal features, nor did they like the talents that they possessed. It turned out that her parents would even lie to her about going to these meetings when they said they were actually going on dates. She didn't find out until she was old enough that she didn't need a babysitter.
It didn't stop there, however. Apparently it was the whole neighborhood. She was the only child in her school that was talented and one of two that had animal features. She wasn't bullied, but the other children would always talk behind her back, whispering slurs against what she was and what she could do. She had a couple of friends, but they were only her friends because they wanted to see what freakish powers she had.
A turning point in Shiven's life was when she had gone to a convention for people who had talent like her. Paper talent, or anything that was associated with it. There were people with her exact powers, "orators" who could make living facsimiles out of written work, people who could make paintings come to life, and so on. There were scouters there, people from academies and agencies looking for those who had especially strong talents. Shiven was dead set on impressing them. When she showed that she not only could do paper craft at an advanced level, plus she could do a bit of what orators could do, and she had created her own weaves at such a young age, these scouters started fighting over her. Finally, a representative from Starling Academy offered her a full ride scholarship. Her parents told her not to go through with it.
Once Shiven was old enough, she left her home and took the scholarship. She couldn't stand the two-faced behavior coming from everyone she knew. After she moved out and closer to the academy that she would go to to further her education with her talent, she found that everyone else was different. In fact, normal people really liked the fact that magical beings were in this world. She found a nice girl and moved in with her so she could continue her education.
Shiven quickly found out that she had no interest in guys, but the girl she was living with was really lovely. Leylu Alkison, from a community that was basically the opposite of where she grew up. They decided to start dating, even. It got pretty hot in their house. Shiven thought it was great, until she found out just how fake the whole thing was.
What lead Shiven to finally leave Leylu was an instant messenger that she had left open on her computer one day. Shiven wasn't going to snoop, but there were really odd pictures up on the screen. In fact, it was a video of a guy playing with himself. The message that went along with it was something to the effect of, "I really enjoyed watching you and your girl toy play last night. Think you'll get another video tonight?" Shiven had no choice but to snoop and found out that Leylu had actually been taking videos of their intimate times together.
After a really loud screaming match between them, Leylu trying to act like it wasn't a big deal, and Shiven explaining in great detail all the things that Leylu could fornicate with for all Shiven cared, Shiven is now looking for a new place to live. She's currently living with the only neighbor she actually got to know, an elderly couple who's son had gone to an engineering school. They were nice enough to let her stay there, but gave her a time limit of two months. She understood, and even signed an agreement stating that.
Personality: Shiven is a rather laid back girl who doesn't make a very big deal about most things. She can't stand liars or people who hide important things from her. She does like to joke around, and has a mind that seems to default to the dirtiest innuendos possible whenever the opportunity comes up (basically a closet pervert.) She loves dark chocolate and sour candies, really likes computers, and claims to have no talent even though she's very gifted with her art. She's always accompanied by a large paper cat that says, "Meow Zedong" on the side, whom she loves. She especially loves him because he's hypoallergenic, requires almost no care, no lease agreement has ever said no to him, he's unlike any other cat because of how loyal he is (which comes from the magic,) and he doesn't complain when she has to fold him up to carry him around in bad weather. Name: Stella Vasilescu
Age: 24
Sex: Female
Orientation: Straight but might be persuaded to experiment
Race: Oddly enough, human.
Gift: Stella has a gift with the human body. It's a very very slight gift, however. How some people gifted with magic can bring things to life, mold things to their will, Stella could just as easily be mistaken to just be exceptional at first aid. The academies looking for gifted people like her didn't even notice that she was gifted until she took up an internship at a hospital and everyone started to heal at an extremely accelerated rate. Stella has been told that other people who have honed gifts similar to hers were able to do much more with it, things like being able to mend lacerations in seconds. She's now determined to be able to do just as well.
Appearance: Stella has brown hair that she likes to tie into two bows, one on either side of her head. She has a spattering of freckles on her face, kind of bushy eyebrows, and brown eyes. She prefers to wear khaki pants and simple shirts and blouses, but can be coaxed into wearing a dress every so often. She's 5'10", just a bit reedy, 170 lbs or so, and just a bit self conscious about her height. She does have piercings, but only Adrian knows about them, and he's probably the only one that ever will know.
Background: Whether it was sheer coincidence or serendipity, Stella grew up with a doctor for a mother and a writer for a father. The writer bit was a joke, actually. Stella's father had two books get published, but the sales were lousy. He liked to introduce himself as a writer only to try to keep on par with his wife. Stella looked up to her mother and always loved her father. As a child, she would encourage her father to keep writing. After blogs got more popular, her father did pick it up on a more regular basis. He had a weekly blog about the funny things in life. It was a lot of medical jokes, really, since he was an outside observer to the two doctors in the house.
Stella loved to go with her mother when she had to work. Any time that she could convince her mother to take her with, Stella would be right there. Her mother worked as a general physician, running her own clinic. It was a small clinic that grew a little faster than it should, partly because of Stella's influence. Not knowing it, Stella had helped nearly every patient who walked in. In little ways, she couldn't cure cancer or something big like that.
After her powers were noticed, both her parents were overjoyed. Her father did all the work to get her every grant he could and her mother picked up the slack instead of allowing Stella to get any loans. Stella basically has a full-ride scholarship to Starling University. She knew it wouldn't be easy, going for a medical degree while also trying to hone her magical abilities. It would be a lot of work, but Stella is determined to finish with a PhD.
After she started the work to get her degree, she was nearly overwhelmed by the pressures this kind of schooling was putting on her. Since she was determined not to take any easy ways out, she got very little free time in her first couple of years. It was a wonder that she was actually able to make her relationship with Adrian blossom the way it did. In hindsight, she suspected it was mostly his doing.
Personality: Stella is rather shy with a wild side that almost nobody gets to see. She's normally quiet when there are people that she doesn't know very well around, but gets kind of loud when you actually get to know her. She's not extremely opinionated, but does like to express what she thinks about almost any subject that anyone would care to listen to. Easily swayed with 'the facts,' she prefers statistics to opinion.
