There's a small town in the Pacific North West called Alkai Island. This island was settled by a bunch of demons, looking for a reprieve from hiding from humanity. They wanted a land that they could call their own, not have to deal with the decadence of humans. Of course, they still hide their identity as much as they can just in case humans ever do make their way into the town. They also do all they can to drive humans away.
To differentiate themselves from any other town, the demons of this town have specialty shops and restaurants that serve demon food. Most of the time, demons are able to drive a human out of town before they happen upon the special items in these shops. Besides, most humans wouldn't even notice strange fruits and herbs. They might get curious, but that's the furthest it would go.
Any demon is welcome to move into the town as long as they follow the law. No killing humans and no revealing what you really are. No demonic fights, no use of magic unless absolutely necessary, no violence whatsoever. Some demons can handle it, ultimately living a happier lives. Other demons shun the Alkai demons, saying their lives are just too soft.
Demons come in many different varieties. Some are more powerful than others, some are too powerful for their own good, some can shift easily while others have a harder time, some have extra-sensory powers while others don't.
Dane was an out of luck college drop out. He was working on a Bachelors in Art History when he found out he couldn't get the funding he needed for the next semester. It was quite a let down, but Dane was going to take this as a sign to find a place to settle down and get a job. He could get back to college after he was a bit more stable.
The first problem Dane came upon was finding a place that would let him in. He looked through the wanted ads plenty of times, but couldn't find anything. He only had a few days left to move out before they would kick him out of the dorms.
Today, he happened to be walking down a street after stopping in at his favorite cafe. His parents were helping him out little-by-little, giving him what they could spare. He had enough money to move his stuff and enough for a small deposit if he needed it. Hopefully he would be able to talk this out with his new landlord.
Dane saw a man scoff at a newspaper that he was reading before folding it over and dropping it into a wastebasket. The man seemed a bit disgruntled, murmuring something about cowards and island. Dane watched him walk away before picking up the newspaper himself.
The paper was titled, "Alkai Inquirer," which looked like a local newspaper for a small town that wasn't that far away from where he was living at the time. He decided on a whim to check the classifieds.
"Huh... Lots of people selling things. Weird things. Are these movie props?" Dane thought out loud. "Let's see... Oh, look, someone is looking for a roommate." They were doing in person interviews, listing times for availability. "Well, that's perfect. I have all the free time in the world anyways. Let's see... I could get there at around 4:00 P.M."
Dane ripped out the ad before tossing the paper out. He walked back home from where he was to get ready, pulling on a blazer, running a comb through his hair before putting his hat back on, and grabbing the keys to his motorcycle.
Moments later, he was on the road, headed out to the island. There were directions on the ad, which seemed kind of sketchy. Head from the highway down a dirt road, across an old bridge, through a neighborhood of people that he didn't know. He seemed to be getting a lot of bad looks while he was driving through. He couldn't tell, though.
Finally arriving, he read the ad for directions to the right apartment. There was no doorbell, so he knocked. He checked his clock, 4:12 P.M. "Remember, calm, cool, collected. You're a nice guy, gonna get a job in town or in a nearby town, never be late on rent. You have at least two months rent already, what could go wrong?" He was antsy, shifting back and forth from one leg to another. He didn't notice the couple that was glaring at the back of his head as they walked by.
